Dialect Coaching

Dialect coaches are professionals who teach individuals to use a particular form of a language which is peculiar to a specific region or social group.

They are often used by actors for assistance with challenging roles. Practice focuses on making your accent sound authentic and natural.

Rather than rely only on listening to and imitating the speech of others, the client is taught what is known as the international phonetic alphabet (IPA). Unlike written English, in which not everything is spelled like it sounds, this writing system consists of symbols that correspond exactly to the speech sounds of a dialect. This visual aid helps break down what sounds are different in a given dialect. Actors are encouraged to transcribe their lines into IPA for better accuracy and authenticity.

Examples of dialects often taught in entertainment and available here are:

-Cockney

-Irish

-Standard British English (RP)

-American Southern

-General American

-New York

-Russian

-Italian

-French
